Quantitative estimate of the Milankovitch-forced contribution to observed Quaternary climate change

چکیده

A number of records commonly described as showing control of climate change by Milankovitch insolation forcing are reexamined. The fraction of the record variance attributable to orbital changes never exceeds 20%. In no case, including a tuned core, do these forcing bands explain the overall behavior of the records. At zero order, all records are consistent with stochastic models of varying complexity with a small superimposed Milankovitch response, mainly in the obliquity band. Evidence cited to support the hypothesis that the 100 Ka glacial/interglacial cycles are controlled by the quasi-periodic insolation forcing is likely indistinguishable from chance, given the small sample size and near-integer ratios of 100 Ka to the precessional periods. At the least, the stochastic background ‘‘noise’’ is likely to be of importance. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Orbital controls on the El Nifio/Southern Oscillation and the tropical climate

The global synchroneity of glacial-interglacial events is one of the major problems in understanding the link between Milankovitch forcing and the climate of the late Quaternary. In this study we isolate a part of the climate system, the tropical Pacific, and test its sensitivity to changes in solar forcing associated with changes in the Earth's orbital parameters. We use a simplified coupled o...

Sedimentology, mineralogy and sedimentary geochemistry of the Late Quaternary sedimentary sequence of Gavkhoni Playa by looking at the paleoclimate

The sediments of the Playa Lake are sensitive indicators of local climates that any change in climate, hydrology, and sedimentary environment will cause changes in the physical and chemical properties of the sediments. These sediments create a valuable and important archive with high resolution to examine these changes in the past. One method of studying climate change during quaternary and oft...

Iran's Climatic Change in the Holocene

Introduction Paleoclimatics studies can respond the many uncertainties about past climate change; an issue that is being studied seriously in the world but less attention has been paid in Iran. The Late Quaternary can be considered as Holocene. Holocene, which spans over 11,000 years ago; In general, it is considered as a period with relatively warm and stable climatic conditions. However, rec...

The relative contributions of radiative forcing and internal climate variability to the late 20th Century winter drying of the Mediterranean region

The roles of anthropogenic climate change and internal climate variability in causing the Mediterranean region’s late 20th Century extended winter drying trend are examined using 19 coupled models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report. The observed drying was influenced by the robust positive trend in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) from the 1960s to t...

Quaternary Loess Deposits of Wadi Gaza in the Middle of the Gaza Strip, Palestine

The Gaza Strip constitutes the south-western part of Palestine. The loess deposits were observed in the Middle and Gaza Governorates in Gaza Strip. This study carried out in the Wadi Gaza where Quaternary loess well crops out. Twenty three samples were collected from nine observation sites in the study area, and performed a textural, calcium carbonate and organic matter content studies. The loe...
